With the boat engine stopped there is a quiet that permeates the area. Suddenly, a 100 yards to port (left) the quiet is broken by the thunderous roar of the surface of the water being hit by the enormous body of the humpback whale. This is one of the many sights that can be observed on the marine wildlife tours that depart from Gustavus. Pods of Humpback whales, seals, sea lions, along with rafts of sea otters and the occasional Orca pods that pass through are common sights.
Overhead the mighty bald eagle soars and looks for a tasty meal just below the surface of the water. Suddenly the eagle plummets toward the water just grazing the surface with its talons then ascends into the air with dinner tightly clutched in its talons.
